Progress is coming along nicely inside the historic Avalon Theatre as part of the Critical Renovations project that began this past year. Don Wooters, interior design consultant on the project for Dwelling & Design, provided his insights regarding the work that has been completed, is now underway, and what is still yet to come.
“The new deep burgandy carpeting with the gold stars and gold border is beginning to be installed in the lobby, where it will wind its way up the staircases to the second floor, balcony and up to the third floor.”
“In addition to the decorative paint aspects like gold leafing and venetian plaster, a lot of the wall and trim painting has been done now as well. The red, black and gold color scheme can clearly be seen throughout the entire theatre, making the whimsical rainbow of colors lining the stage, balcony, and adjacent light fixtures standout even more.”
“The new stage lighting is now installed in the balcony which will give professional theatrical lighting for all shows to come.”
As he explains, further renovations to the balcony and downstairs areas (including lower bathroom) are now underway.
“The contractors have started the balcony construction portion of the project this past month. The seating has been removed and a new system of tiers of seating is being created according to the architects’ specifications. This new arrangement will allow for more knee room everywhere, as well as giving everyone an uninterrupted view of the stage. Previously, the front rows of the balcony had views with the guard rails and hand rails in their sight lines. There will also be all new seating in the balcony and lighting to make it easy to see your way to your seats.”
